Alternative Investments – Options For Investors?

Residential property prices have crashed. The stock market smashed last year. With the base rate at 0.5%, the best bank accounts aren’t yielding much more than 3%. No wonder investors are looking for alternatives. Even if they only offered similar returns to cash and equity investment, alternative investments would still provide portfolio diversification.
So what are the some of the options available to investors?

Agricultural investment

One interesting alternative is agricultural investment. Buying an arable farm might not be realistic for most investors, but pooled investment funds now allow investors to put as little as £1,000 a time into jatropha plantations (a form of biofuel) via Green Oil Investments, wheat in Western Australia via Hurlingham Capital, and teak plantations in Costa Rica via Costa Rica Invest.

While investors could equally – and more easily – purchase a commodities ETF, these investments give an exposure to land values as well as commodity prices and income. Hurlingham’s wheat based investments offer low risk (the capital value is partly protected) together with yields around 8% a year, and terms from 5 to 7 years. These look highly attractive for the income investor. Other prospects, such as some of the biofuels investments on the market, offer much higher returns, but have potentially higher risks, being based in countries where political risk is high. Not all such schemes offer annual returns; some require a 5-15 year investment period (for instance, in teak, even if bought as an existing plantation).

This is still a fairly new area of investment, and investors should do due diligence on the legal small print of the scheme as well as the underlying investment story.

Forestry

Forestry, on the other hand, has a long history as an investment for high net worth individuals in the UK. There are substantial tax breaks for forestry – no income tax or CGT is payable, and forestry investments are free of inheritance tax liability once they have been owned for two years.

Yields are volatile but can be nifty. Although forestry returns fell from the 31.6% enjoyed in 2007, 2008 still saw a 7% total annual return – way ahead of the commercial or residential property sectors or the stock market.

However, it’s an expensive business to get into – funds are available through FIM, but the minimum investment is £50,000. And this is a long term investment – it can take twenty years to harvest a plantation, during which time there’s no income.

Vintage cars and boats

More ‘lifestyle’ investments include vintage cars and boats. Here again there’s potentially a tax advantage – since they count as wasting assets, such assets have no CGT liability. (Don’t forget though that this also means losses can’t be claimed against profits on other assets such as shares.) Pre-1973 cars also have a zero rate of road tax – though you’ll still need to get them MOT’d.

For novice vintage car owners, a good suggestion is to choose a car with a strong owners’ club, which is a good source of advice. Owners will need to be able to maintain the vehicle in pristine condition – so this is not an investment to undertake if you’re occasionally short of funds. In fact, it will cost money every year, in insurance and maintenance, and pays no income – so if you don’t make a good capital return at the end of it, you’ve lost out. However, it’s a market that can be entered at a relatively low cost. For instance an MGB Roadster will set you back £6-8,000 – less than a new Ford Mondeo. And of course if you want to drive the car, no one’s stopping you – though more than a few hundred miles a year, and you could be reducing the capital value of the car.

There is no index for vintage car prices, so investors need to research the price history for the specific car they’re looking at. Some cars have done well – others, though, have fallen back. Morris Minors have lost 40% of their value since the 1980s. Investors need to do their own work here – there don’t appear to be any investment managers or advisers in this field, as there are in forestry or wine investment.

It can also be difficult to sell, particularly at the high end of the market. In a recession, it’s going to be difficult to offload a vintage Bugatti – and auction houses such as Bonhams (http://www.bonhams.com), which has a specialised vintage car department, have high charges.

Investment in art

Investment in art is perhaps the most attractive lifestyle investment; again, the entry point can be quite low, particularly with modern prints. You can still get a Picasso print for less than £1,000.

However, though art is often sold as ‘recession proof’, this is not true. The art world is prone to bubbles – pop art, particularly Andy Warhol, fetched high prices in 2007, but the bottom fell out of the market last year. And several high value works by BritArt doyen Damien Hirst failed to sell in the immediate aftermath of the Lehman crash. On the other hand if you buy works by an artist or school that isn’t currently in fashion, and they get ‘discovered’, you could strike it lucky.

Anyone considering investing in the art market should consider exhaustive research before getting their wallets out. The auction houses, Christie’s and Sotheby’s, are a good source of information, though of course they do have a vested interest; http://Artprice.com is another excellent resource. But taste is subjective, of course – there is no objective value criterion to refer to, as there is with equities.

So although art investment offers both the prospect of diversification, and positive returns, it’s difficult to see how investors can achieve this in practice.

It’s also worth noting that art is another illiquid market, with high transaction costs to both buyers and sellers (auction houses charge a buyer’s premium of 10%). It is not a market for ‘flipping’ or short term traders. There are no tax advantages to an investment in art, and those wanting to buy pictures to put in a SIPP should notice that they won’t be able to hang them on the wall – personal use of SIPP assets is barred.

However the big difficulty with both vintage cars and art investment is that it’s fatally easy to confuse rational investment with emotional attraction. That’s even worse with another alternative investment, wine – because at least with art, if you hang a picture on the wall, it doesn’t destroy its investment value. With wine, open your long-cellared bottle, and your investment has just disappeared.

Wine

However wine has done extremely well in the past few years. The Liv-Ex wine index stood at 120 in 2005, and had reached 264 in summer 2009. By definition, the annual supply of wine from the top vineyards in France can’t increase. Vintage wine also improves with age, so the longer you hold it, the more the price should increase, if you’ve made the right selection to start with.

Wine is another investment that is free of capital gains tax. If you buy it ‘in bond’, as a pure investment, you also don’t have to pay excise duty – a significant saving. There are a number of advisers in this market; Albany Wines provides advice for investors wanting to invest in Bordeaux wines, and suggests £10-20,000 as a good starting amount to create a diversified portfolio.

Of course wine is purely a capital play; there is no income during the term of the investment. To compare wine with equities, then, you’d have to compare not just the prices, but the total return on equities, including dividend income – and once you do this, the returns from wine don’t look quite that attractive. Investors should also note that this has been a favoured area for scams and frauds – a number of firms set up to help investors buy wine en primeur (basically a forward contract) went bust, having not passed investors’ money on to the vineyard. Check out http://www.investdrinks.org before parting with any money.

Conclusion

Alternative investment can provide helpful diversification for a portfolio. However, it requires at least the same degree of rigour, discipline and scrutiny as traditional stock market investing, if not more given that these classes of assets tend to be far less regulated. Each market has its idiosyncrasies and there are a number of major pitfalls, not least the potential for liquidity to dry up and the exposure to changes in taste.

The Types of Guaranteed Investments

Guaranteed investments offer stability and security to those wishing to invest with no risk to capital. This is a significant attraction to those who saw the value of their other investments fall dramatically in recent years, and indeed to those who only witnessed the economic downturn, and are coming to invest money now.

These type of investments are rapidly gaining in popularity, as many investors who felt the pain of the recent slump in stock investments seek more stability and security, moving forward.

Within the spectrum of these investments, we look into the three of the more prominent products are the bonds investments: income bonds, guaranteed bonds, and fixed interest bonds.

Guaranteed Bonds
Offer a premium investment to those prepared to lock their money away over a fixed period of time. This period is known as the term of the bond. As guaranteed investments, these bonds offer to return, as a minimum, the capital invested, plus any growth that is achieved.

Bonds come with various terms, and a typical bond term might require the investor to leave cash invested for five years.

The Guaranteed Investment Bond is a single premium, unit linked insurance bond that invests in a range of portfolios.  The bond offers a guaranteed investment over 8 years, and has the attractive feature that annual growth in the bond up to 10% can be rolled back in, and becomes part of the guaranteed investment.

The usual minimum investment in this bond is £10,000.  It follows that the investor is guaranteed, at the end of the bond term, their return will be no less than their initial investment.  However, investors must specify and select the guarantee, which is not automatic. In other words, if the investor chooses not to select the guarantee option, no assurance is attached, and there is a possibility that their eventual return may be less than the amount invested.

The security of guaranteed investments generally comes at a cost, however, few financial services like MetLife Guaranteed Investment Bond provide on the basis of an assurance charge, which is an insurance premium to cover the cost of the guarantee.

Guaranteed Investments – Income Bonds
Income bonds may suit those who wish to enjoy a monthly income from interest on a lump sum guaranteed investment. This type of bond is not invested in the stock market and may be the guaranteed investment of choice for those wishing to avoid stock market investments.

The level of monthly income will depend on the interest rate offered when investing in the bond. Any charges on income bonds are wrapped into the bond, which means that you get the rate of interest that you were promised.

Income bonds offer the security of knowing that your original sum is secure and will be returned to you, combined with the monthly or annual interest payments on your cash. (You can also choose to roll up your annual interest, and take it at the end of the bond’s term). These payments are taxable, and can be paid directly into your bank account.

As is generally the case with bonds, penalty charges are generally payable if the bond is cashed in before the end of its term. From that point of view, income bonds are suitable only where the investor can do without the cash for the term of the bond.

Guaranteed Investments – Fixed Rate Bonds
Fixed rate bonds belong to these type of investments in that they offer a fixed rate of interest to investors.

Cash must remain invested in the bond for an agreed number of years and interest from the bond can be paid monthly or annually, either into the bond or into a bank account.

Returns on fixed rate bonds depend on the amount invested, the interest rate agreed, and the term of the investment. Generally, the longer you agree to leave your money invested, the better the terms you will receive. Fixed rate bonds offer a high degree of stability to the investor, combined with the knowledge of how much will be returned, on a monthly or annual basis.

There are a large and varied range of investment products.  These are just a few of many investments available.  As with all guaranteed investments, it is a great option for those who need the security of knowing that there is no risk to their capital.

Stock market is one of the platforms where you and me can invest money easily and can earn a good return on our investment. But there are a lot of views, queries in human minds about the stock investment. Why? I can say it is a risky platform for investment because it is a general thinking. A normal man think twice before investing in the stock market because of the fear of losing money. One can invest money easily in the stock market but it can’t be said that he are she could gain from the market. Because which is the right track no one knows.

Which investment is more better

Stock market is more risky that is the reason why people like to invest in banks, post office etc. They prefer the policies that the bank is offering rather than to invest in stocks. The reason behind this is the safer plans and rules. The bank investment is more safe because here everything is predefined means the money that you are investing in the bank and the return that the bank decided for you everything is calculated. But stock market never return on your investment on the basis of the rules and the norms.

Now it can be said that investment in different banks is good rather than to invest in stock market. Exactly not. It is not like that because stock market is risky but it gives best return on the investment that is the only reason for that stock market is estimated 11 times the size of the entire world economy. So it can be said that stock market is the largest market because it is fruitful for the investors.

Stock investment benefits

Some benefits are seen easily for stock investment these are :

We can earn money on daily basis.

No boundations for the investors. Everyone can invest when he wants.

The other charges like brokerage etc.are many less.

We can start with a small amount.

Every one can trade with stocks.

One can trade with stocks either on the exchange floor or electronically.

General thinking of the people is to make more and more money quickly. So for that now a days all are ready to take risk. They afraid but at once they prepare for investment in stock market because they want to earn a lot money and for that they have dreamed for the huge profit behind this investment. This is true that one can earn easily and can make his dream true but for that a true idea behind every investment should be there because if it will not be there it is impossible to earn money from the stock market. It can be the better investment only when the stock updates and ideas behind the investment will be there. So if the system works correctly you can earn but if you think that something is going wrong than wait, watch, generate a new idea , invest again and than earn what you want.

Investment advice is usually geared toward those with thousands, or at least $1,000 to invest, in addition to the standard three-to-six-months salary socked away in a savings account.

Most of us know how important it is to supplement our retirement with additional investment in traditional taxable investment accounts. Simply maxing out your IRA contributions and putting away 6% of your paycheck into the employer’s 401(k) just may not do it, but not everyone has the thousands that most investment advice requires. Here is a plan developed with the ultra-small investor in mind. It takes just $100, every month for a year.

Should You Invest?

First, it is important to prioritize your financial concerns. If you have high-interest credit card debt, do not invest until you are debt free. While it is possible to make more money investing than you are losing on finance charges, it is highly unlikely. Your money is best spent lowering credit card balances.

Also, if you have no cash savings, you should consider putting this plan off until you have savings equal to at least three months’ salary.

Finally, if you would be devastated if you lost all of the money you invested, you should probably stay away from directly investing. While not likely if you are conservative, it is possible to lose all or some of the money you invest, no matter what the security.

Start Investing With Just $100

1. Open a brokerage account with a low-cost online broker. It’s important that you’re not paying more than $5 per trade, because that’s money that will be coming out of your investment. Also, make sure that the broker you choose has no minimum account balance, or fees will eat up your entire balance. For more about discount stock brokers you can visit our broker comparison chart.
2. Fund your account. This is where you send your first $100 to the broker via check, wire transfer, or ACH transfer. I recommend ACH transfer, which is like an electronic check, because a check will take a few weeks to process and a wire transfer is too costly for investing such a small amount.
3. Make your first investment.

What you invest in is, of course very important, and professional investment advice is too expensive if you’re only investing $100. But studies have shown that the best returns come from widely diverse portfolios.

Now, you can’t easily have a widely diverse portfolio with $100, since that won’t even get you one share of Google (GOOG) or Toyota (TM). But Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) make it easy to invest a small amount of money in a wide variety of securities, because they are shares in a larger pool of securities. The Vanguard Total Stock Market VIPER (VTI) tracks over 6,000 U.S. stocks, and it’s like investing your first $100 in the entire U.S. stock market. The iShares MSCI-EAFE (EFA) invests in stocks from Europe, Australia and Asia. The iShares Lehman Aggregate Bond (AGG) tracks the Lehman Brothers Aggregate Bond Index, and it’s like investing your $100 in the entire bond market.

If, after three months, you have put $100 into each of these funds, you will have a well-diversified portfolio that should withstand most of the market’s fluctuations. Losses in any particular sector of the stock market should be offset by gains in other areas of the market. Add to it each month, never investing less than $100 at a time, and you should see the value of your account grow just as the stock market does.

There are many ETFs to choose from and they are getting more diverse, including junk bond and commodities funds. Personally I would stay away from them until there’s at least $1,000 in stock and traditional bond ETFs, since the majority of your portfolio should include traditional investments, not alternative investments.

As you watch your investment grow (and then pull back, and then grow again) you should learn more about asset allocation and portfolio diversification, which are the keys to investment success. The more diverse your investments, the more you will be able to withstand volatile markets when stocks dip.

Finally, when the total value of your investment reaches $10,000, you should consider seeking professional investment advice and transferring your holdings to traditional mutual funds, which are a bit easier to manage, but typically have higher investment minimums.

Surprised to read about tax-planning in the month of April? Isn’t tax-planning supposed to be an ‘end of the financial year’ exercise? Well, the answer is no! Tax-planning isn’t an activity to be conducted in a rushed manner at the end of the year. Simply because, it forms an integral part of your financial planning activity. Tax-planning is as much about contributing to your financial goals as it is about reducing your tax liability. So, the right time to start thinking about tax-planning is now!

Then, there is the need to objectively consider your risk profile (among other factors) while conducting the tax-planning exercise. For example, risk-taking investors could hold a portfolio dominated by market-linked avenues like tax-saving funds (also known as ELSS) and unit linked insurance plans (ULIPs); on the other hand, risk-averse investors should be predominantly invested in assured return schemes.

Speaking of assured return schemes, the small savings schemes segment perhaps represents the most comprehensive pool of the former. More importantly, a number of small savings schemes are eligible for tax benefits under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act i.e. investments of upto Rs 100,000 per annum (pa) are eligible for deduction from gross total income. Traditionally, small savings schemes have formed the core of most tax-saving portfolios. In this article, we discuss the investment proposition offered by some small savings schemes that can also aid you with tax-planning.

1. Public Provident Fund
Investments in Public Provident Fund (PPF) are recurring in nature and run over a 15-Yr period. Annual contributions are mandatory to keep the PPF account active. The minimum and maximum investment amounts are pegged at Rs 500 pa and Rs 70,000 pa respectively. Only contributions of up to Rs 70,000 pa are eligible for tax benefits under Section 80C. Any amount invested over the aforementioned is returned without interest.

At present, PPF investments yield a return of 8.0% pa. However, it should be noted that the returns are assured but not fixed. This is because the rate of return is subject to revision i.e. it can be revised upwards or downwards thereby impacting the returns.

Liquidity
With no provision for a regular interest payout, PPF fares rather poorly on the liquidity front. Withdrawals can be made only from the seventh financial year. Furthermore, the amount that can be withdrawn depends on the balance in the PPF account in the earlier years.

Taxation
Apart from Section 80C tax benefits on the amount invested, interest income from PPF investments is exempt from tax under Section 10(11) of the Income Tax Act.

Apt for…
Given that investments in PPF run over a 15-Yr period and that annual contributions are mandatory, it is an ideal avenue to build a corpus for long-term needs like retirement and children’s education. It will appeal to investors who accord higher priority to returns over liquidity.

2. National Savings Certificate
Investing in National Savings Certificate (NSC) entails making a lump sum investment for a 6-Yr period. While the minimum investment amount is Rs 100, there is no upper limit. Presently, investments in NSC earn a return of 8.0% pa, compounded on a half-yearly basis. In other words, Rs 100 invested will grow to approximately Rs 160 on maturity. Unlike PPF, the rate of return in NSC is locked in while investing; as a result, the investments are indifferent to any subsequent change in rates.

Liquidity
NSC scores poorly on the liquidity front. Interest income is received on maturity. Also, premature withdrawals are permitted only in specific circumstances like death of the holder, forfeiture by the pledgee or under court’s order.

Taxation
Investments of upto Rs 100,000 pa are eligible for tax benefits under Section 80C. Furthermore, the interest accruing annually is deemed to be reinvested, hence it qualifies for deduction under Section 80C. However, the interest income is chargeable to tax.

Apt for…
Given its nature (lump sum investments), NSC is best suited for gainfully investing one-time surpluses and to provide for needs that will arise over a corresponding (6-Yr) timeframe. It will be apt for investors seeking returns over liquidity.

3. Post Office Time Deposits
Post Office Time Deposits (POTDs) are fixed deposits from the small savings segment. While investors can opt for 1-Yr, 2-Yr, 3-Yr and 5-Yr POTDs, only the 5-Yr ones are eligible for tax benefits under Section 80C. A 5-Yr POTD earns a return of 7.5% pa; the interest is calculated quarterly and paid annually. In other words, Rs 10,000 invested in a 5-Yr POTD will deliver an interest income of approximately Rs 771 pa. The minimum investment amount is Rs 200, while there is no upper limit.

Liquidity
POTDs fare favourably on the liquidity front, thanks to the annual interest payouts. Premature withdrawals are permitted after 6 months from the date of deposit; however, the same entails bearing a penalty in the form of loss of interest. Finally, any excess interest paid is recovered from the principal amount and the interest payable.

Taxation
Investments of upto Rs 100,000 pa are eligible for tax benefits under Section 80C. The interest income is chargeable to tax.

Apt for…
The 5-Yr POTD can be utilised for generating an annual and risk-free income, alongside making a tax-saving investment.

4. Senior Citizens Savings Scheme
Unlike the other avenues that we have discussed so far, Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) is open only to a section of the investor community i.e. senior citizens. Individuals who are 60 years of age and above can invest in the scheme; those who have attained 55 years of age and have retired under a voluntary retirement scheme can also participate in the scheme, subject to certain conditions being fulfilled.

The minimum and maximum investment amounts are Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500,000 respectively. Investments in SCSS run over a 5-Yr period and earn a return of 9.0% pa.

Liquidity
Given that SCSS is targeted at senior citizens, the liquidity aspect has been adequately addressed; interest payouts are made on a quarterly basis i.e. on 31st March, 30th June, 30th September and 31st December every year.

Premature withdrawals are permitted after the expiry of 1 year from the date of opening of the account. In case of withdrawals made after 1 year but before the completion of 2 years, an amount equal to 1.5% of the initial amount invested is deducted. In case of withdrawals made on or after the expiry of 2 years, an amount equal to 1.0% of the initial amount is deducted.

Taxation
Investments in SCSS are eligible for tax benefits under Section 80C. The interest income is chargeable to tax and subject to tax deduction at source (TDS) as well. Investors whose tax liability on the estimated income for the financial year is nil, can avoid TDS by furnishing a declaration in Form 15-H or Form 15-G as applicable.

Apt for…
Expectedly, SCSS is meant for senior citizens who wish to receive an assured income at regular time intervals. The tax benefits only add to the allure of the scheme.

Comparing Short Term And Long Term Investments

There are two major types of investments done in the stock trading arena these days –short-term investments and long-term investments. If you find yourself overwhelmed and confused in choosing which type would be best, simply take note of the differences between these two varieties and consider the advantages and disadvantages of each to be guided in making the right decisions.

Basically, the major difference between the two investments is the fact that short-term plans are actually designed to show a substantial yield in a short time period. While long-term investments, on the other hand, are designed to last for quite a few years and present a slow yet progressive increase in its yield.

Let us discover more about the differences when it comes to the disadvantages and advantages of each type of investment.

Short Term Investments

The major advantages of investing for a short-term plan are the potentials for growth at a very fast period of time, ranging from a few weeks to a few months. Although there may be fluctuating trends that could affect the market, short-term loans can still allow you more control over your money and you it is more likely that you can keep a more watchful eye on your investment.

However, this type of investment may be a bit riskier due to the fluctuations present in such a volatile stock market, as mentioned above. As compared to its long-term counterpart, this type of investment may much easily be affected by unpredictable circumstances because it is in a shorter period of time. And so, even if there is a very huge chance that you can make a lot of money in this type of investment, there are also great chances that you can lose a lot.

Long-Term Investments

For long-term investment plans on the other hand, there is a greater ability for this type of investment to gain small and distributed profits over a longer time frame. And because it has a slow-but-steady pace, it becomes more stable and involves fewer risks.

But of course, a disadvantage for the slow growth of your investments may indicate that you cannot expect to earn profit right away especially when you are badly in need of money. In addition, you may also have less control over your money because your investment would not mature right away.

Also take note that because investments may require a lot of fees to be paid as it progresses and due to occurring fluctuations in the market, most long-term investments may experience down time before they can actually climb up and become productive.

In choosing between these two major types of investments, the most important thing you have to consider in order to gauge which plan would become more beneficial to you is to contemplate on your reasons for investing.

If you invested in stocks with the ultimate goal to earn money fast then surely a short-term plan would suit you. But on the other hand, if you want to invest for future and insurance purposes like in cases wherein you want to have money when you grow old, then a long-term plan for investing is best.

Whatever your decision may be, always remember that there are advantages and disadvantage in all kinds of investments. And ultimately, to become successful in your endeavor, you must be willing to take on minimal risks and make smart decisions in order to manage your trades.

Alternative Investments in Finance

Alternative investment involves investment in assets other than the traditional products of stocks, bonds or cash. These assets include the likes of art, antiques, wine, coins or rare stamps – in other words, rare items. Financial assets like commodities, private equity, hedge funds and financial derivatives are also accommodated in alternative investment. Due to the complexities in their nature and the regulations and the illiquidity involved, alternative investment assets are usually held by institutional investors or accredited individuals.

A thorough investment analysis is required before buying and investing in alternative financial resources. They also involve a high minimum investment and fee structures compared to mutual funds. Traditional investment involves risk. We have seen how in recent times the world of finance was hit as bankruptcy triggered panic across the globe. But even in troubled waters, you don’t need to be bearish if you are the proud owner of a few bottles of Bordeaux or a Penny Black or may be a series of Andy Warhol prints as you are supposed to get their money back virtually.

Why do people go for alternative financial investment?

A probable reason why people invest in alternative resources is to diversify and reduce the overall investment risk. Portfolio diversification is suggested to potential investors to minimize the risk. And this can be achieved through alternative investment.

Advantages to investing alternatively:

1. Alternative investment involves low correlation with traditional financial investments like stocks and bonds. As a result several large institutional funds like the pension and private endowments have already begun allocating a small proportion, less than 10%, of their portfolios to alternative investments like hedge funds.

2. It is comparatively less liquid in nature.

Disadvantages to investing alternatively:

1. Lack of published verifiable performance data and minimum opportunity to advertise to potential investors.

2. Determining the current market value of assets is often difficult.

3. Cost of purchase and sales is relatively high.

The most common types of alternative investment include:

• Hedge funds as alternative financial investments include a wide range of investment assets like stocks and commodities, which principally aim at offsetting the potential losses in the markets.

• Future funds as alternative investments are standardized contracts of sale and purchase of commodity at a predetermined price on a specific date. Futures are used to trade currencies and commodities like petroleum and agricultural products.

• Real estate can also serve as an alternative investment option, which typically involves buying and selling of immovable properties like land and premises. It yields rental income as well as capital appreciation.

• Though not always viewed as such, art is certainly an alternative investment. This investment option gained some new traction after the 2008 market downturn and recession period.

• Investment in vintage items, such as fine wine, has proved profitable with consistent high-yield returns, even in the months of 2008 credit crunch.

• The precious metal gold is used as a defensive alternative financial investment, which tends to grow in popularity during periods of prolonged economic upheavals.

In this readily evolving economic climate, as investors are striving to locate the best investment niche, these alternative financial investment options are gaining greater and greater appreciation due to their low-risk and high-yield nature.

For Successful Investments, Know the Tricks to the Trade

It does not waive off the risk of loss totally, but it definitely creates more avenues for profit. The investor can invest in a number of different companies, foreign securities and mutual funds. Even if one company declares a loss, the investor still has the other investments to fall back on. Diversification is a good method to counter the risk involved in the total loss of an investment.

Simple Approach: It is safe for amateur investors to follow simple guidelines for investing money. Immature investors should not invest in companies that they are not very sure about and haven’t researched. A simple approach to investment is to stake money in recognized companies that offer high returns and show a consistent growth pattern. It pays to conduct a research on the company before making an investment.

Be Disciplined: Market trends fluctuate due to several reasons. An investor’s judgment should not be based on momentary instability. Invest Smartly: Investors need to be well informed and alert all the time. Cautious long-term planning is as important as being patient.
